What
is Salsa?
Salsa is the distillation of many Latin and Afro Caribbean dances.
Characterized by subtle hip movements and a more intimate dance
position, Salsa is a very sexy dance.
The Salsa that we teach at Jitterbugs Swingapore is a mix of LA and Cuban street style on 1. We are now also offering On 2 classes. Click here for more info!
Attire: Dress comfortably.
Footwear: Court shoes with ankle straps that secure the shoe to
your feet. Sneakers or track shoes. No
slippers or sandals

Latin Fiesta @ Jitterbugs Swingapore
Every Friday, 9 to 11 pm
Every Friday, Latin Fiesta is held at Jitterbugs Swingapore. Not only is it the place for our students to practice their moves and grooves, it is also the meeting place of Singapore Salseros to shine and style.
Cost: $5 or free if you take a related class on Friday.
Salsa 1
(Beginner, 8-week course)
Our Salsa 1 courses are structured 8-week classes (one hour
per week) that cover the fundamentals of salsa dancing. At the end
of the 8 weeks, you should be able to dance the salsa socially.
Dance
experience is not expected or required in this class -- you can
take this class if you've never danced in your life before. Or you
can take it as a refresher course, if you've learnt salsa "somewhere,
sometime ago".
You can come alone or bring your friends with you, but you do not need to bring a partner. In our classes, to emphasize the social
aspect of the dance, we'll rotate partners frequently, so that you
will be able to salsa with anybody and everybody.
Salsa 2
(Beginner / Intermediate, 2 x 8-week courses)
Our Salsa 2 classes are 8-week courses with 2 syllabi, LA [A] and [B],
which means that you can do both syllabi A and B concurrently in
8-weeks, or you can finish the 2 syllabi over 16 weeks.
Salsa 2 builds on Salsa 1, by consolidating the fundamentals you
learnt in Salsa 1 (or elsewhere). Our objective in Salsa 2 is to
expand your salsa moves vocabulary, and to introduce you to the
different techniques, concepts and aspects of Salsa dancing. At the end of the
2 courses of Salsa 2 classes, you should be quite comfortable dancing
socially.
Like
Salsa 1, you don't need to bring a partner, but Salsa experience
at the level of Salsa 1 is a must.
Salsa 3
(Ongoing classes)
Salsa 3 students are expected to be comfortable with all the shines
and variations that we will teach in Level 2 classes - we will
not teach these in Level 3. More complicated variations and
styling are taught.
Salsa 4
(Ongoing classes - by audition only)
Salsa 4 classes focus on technique and trickier variations with
multiple turns as the norm. Dancing on different counts will also
be introduced. Students at this level should be comfortable with
lead and follow techniques, styling and musicality.
On2 Salsa NEW!
Similar to the Los-Angeles style on 1, this is a course on Salsa danced "On Two". Also known as the NY style, the basic step timing is 2-3-4,6-7-8 with the breaks on 2 and 6. Some consider dancing "On Two" to work more closely to the clave rhythm, the fundamental rhythm of salsa music. Dancing on 2 means that the break step synchronises with the accented slap of the tumbao pattern played on the conga drum. For this reason it is said to be more punchy and rhythmically oriented, whereas on 1 is more melodically oriented.
Currently the style to dance in most parts of the world, it is fast gaining popularity in Singapore. Classes consist of an 8-week course of 1.5 hours per class and will incorporate Cha-Cha-Cha elements. Salsa I is a pre-requisite.
This course is currently unavailable. Please contact us if you are interested in learning On2 Salsa.
Salsa Clinics
(Bi-annual, by appointment)
The aim of our Salsa Clinic is to provide all dancers with the
opportunity to improve their skills. We recognise that everyone
learns at a different pace and has different goals for their dancing.
Some are keen to develop and are willing to put in time and effort
to practice, while others simply prefer to just enjoy dance as a
recreation!
Salsa Clinics offer critical feedback to those that wish to improve
their Salsa. Clinics will be held once every 6 months and gives
you a chance to work one-on-one with a teacher for 15 minutes. We
assume that you come to the session ready to receive candid and
frank comments (though of course you may choose to disagree!)
Once the dates of the clinic are announced, please e-mail
us to book your 15-minute slot. Your slot will be confirmed
by return e-mail. A teacher from our faculty will be assigned at
random (you may not request your favourite!) Please do not be late
for your slot.
Fee: $10 per 15-minute slot.
Please remember:
1. We would love everyone to be in Level IV! We want to offer constructive comments to help you improve. But we can only do so if you also want the same thing and are ready to work for it.
2. It's ok to be a 'recreational dancer' who is happy with just enjoying each dance. (As long you don't injure your partner or fellow dancers!) Improving your skills as a dancer in any dance form just requires practice and effort.
Salsa Performances
